General description

(±)-Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol are two non-toxic compounds responsible for the earthy and musty odor of water and soil. They are the secondary off-flavor metabolites produced by algae and bacteria under organic and aerobic conditions.

Application

The CRM can also be used as follows:

  • Determination of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) coupled with liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometric (LC-APCI-MS) detection
  • Detection of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in 100 cyanobacterial strains using solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME GC-MS)
  • Simultaneous analysis of 51 odor-causing compounds in drinking water samples by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) coupled with gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS)
  • Optimization of a headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the quantification of off-flavor compounds in wine samples
  • Development and validation of a gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method to measure off-flavor odorants in cork stopper samples following their headspace solid-phase microextraction using divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) coated fibers
