Amicon® Ultra Devices: Advancing Lab Sustainability Through ISCC PLUS Certification

Amicon® Ultra devices in a row featuring the 0.5 mL, 2.0 mL, 4.0 mL, and 15 mL devices.

Amicon® Ultra centrifugal filter devices have long been trusted for reliable sample concentration and buffer exchange across life science applications. Now, these same devices are contributing to a more sustainable future for your lab.

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, Amicon® Ultra devices now incorporate ISCC PLUS certified materials—a global standard recognizing the use of bio-attributed feedstocks.

What’s New in Amicon® Ultra Products — and What Isn’t

  • Unchanged membrane and device performance: Ultracel® regenerated cellulose membranes continue to deliver the same levels of recovery and filtration efficiency—no revalidation needed.
  • New material traceability: Amicon® Ultra products, part of our Greener Alternative Product portfolio, now contain bio-attributed polymers (via mass balance allocation).

How the ISCC PLUS Certification Works

ISCC PLUS certification is based on the mass balance approach, a method that allows renewable and fossil-based feedstocks to be processed together while carefully tracking and allocating the renewable content. Through independent verification, we can attribute a portion of certified renewable raw materials to each finished product.

This enables:

  • Reduced reliance on fossil resources
  • Support for circular material streams
  • Full traceability of bio-based inputs

Supporting Lab Sustainability Without Compromise

By incorporating ISCC PLUS certified materials into Amicon® Ultra devices, we’re helping labs reduce their environmental footprint—without changing workflows or product performance.

This is one step in our broader journey to support sustainability in science with trusted, transparent solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About ISCC PLUS Certified Amicon® Ultra Devices

Has anything changed about the Amicon® Ultra device performance or membranes?

No—the Ultracel® membranes and device specifications are unchanged. The update is in renewable feedstock sourcing and certification only.

No revalidation is required. These are the same trusted devices—now with verified bio-based material attribution behind them.

ISCC PLUS certification ensures that a portion of the plastic used in production comes from bio-attributed (recycled) feedstocks, tracked and verified via the mass balance approach.

This plastic is currently used in the 0.5 mL and 2 mL devices, and in the sample holder of the 4 mL and 15 mL Amicon® Ultra devices.

ISCC is the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. It’s an independent certification supporting sustainable supply chains.

The mass balance approach is a method that allows renewable and fossil-based raw materials to be mixed during production, while ensuring that the amount of certified renewable input is tracked and allocated to the final product under strict auditing standards.

Yes. Choosing ISCC PLUS certified products helps reduce dependence on fossil resources, supports circular economies, and provides documented contributions toward institutional sustainability objectives.
