荧光素（游离酸）被广泛用作许多活细胞和组织的荧光染色和跟踪。它也适合作为研究胆管运动的标志物。临床应用包括评估眼表和描绘缺乏血脑屏障的脑区域，以实现准确的恶性胶质瘤手术切除。荧光素血管造影有助于研究视网膜血液供应的变化。荧光素还可以作为一种生理示踪剂来表征鲑鱼的肠通透性（Schep 等，1998），并用于房水流量的荧光光度法测量。它被广泛用作量子产量标准。
