2-氧代丁酸钠可用于制备金属配合物，如镧系元素聚（亚氨基羧酸酯）配合物以及(S)1-氨基-2-（甲氧基甲基）-吡咯烷的半夹心配合物。它还可用于合成抗病毒剂、6-氮杂嘧啶-2′-脱氧-4′-硫代核苷。
