General description
Phospho Tau 181 refers to a phosphorylated form of the tau protein, specifically at threonine 181. This post-translational modification influences tau′s structure and function, often leading to its aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles, which are characteristic of various neurodegenerative diseases. In healthy neurons, tau stabilizes microtubules and supports axonal transport. However, when phosphorylated at T181, tau tends to misfold and form aggregates, disrupting microtubule stability and impairing neuronal function.
Elevated levels of phospho Tau 181 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) serve as a biomarker for neurodegeneration, particularly in Alzheimer′s disease, where its presence correlates with disease severity and progression. Additionally, phospho Tau 181 contributes to neuroinflammation by activating glial cells, which can exacerbate neuronal damage and promote disease progression.
