General description

pTau217 (phospho-Tau 217) refers to a phosphorylated form of the tau protein at serine 217. This specific phosphorylation event alters tau′s conformation and enhances its propensity to aggregate into neurofibrillary tangles, which are hallmarks of several neurodegenerative diseases. In healthy neurons, tau stabilizes microtubules and facilitates intracellular transport. However, when phosphorylated at S217, tau misfolds and forms toxic aggregates that disrupt microtubule stability and impair neuronal function. Elevated levels of phospho Tau 217 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) serve as a sensitive biomarker for Alzheimer′s disease and other tauopathies, correlating with disease progression and cognitive decline. Moreover, pTau217 plays a role in neuroinflammation by activating glial cells, which can exacerbate neuronal injury and promote further neurodegenerative processes.
