General description

pTau231 (phospho-Tau 231) refers to a phosphorylated form of the tau protein at threonine 231. This specific phosphorylation alters tau′s structure and enhances its tendency to aggregate into neurofibrillary tangles, which are characteristic features of various neurodegenerative diseases. In healthy neurons, tau stabilizes microtubules and supports axonal transport, facilitating effective communication between neurons. However, when phosphorylated at T231, tau misfolds and forms toxic aggregates that disrupt microtubule stability, impairing neuronal function and contributing to cell death. Elevated levels of pTau231 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) serve as a biomarker for Alzheimer′s disease and other tauopathies, correlating with disease severity and cognitive decline. Additionally, phospho Tau 231 can promote neuroinflammation by activating glial cells, which further exacerbates neuronal injury and accelerates disease progression.
