- As a solvent in the Wittig reaction for synthesizing α-hydroxy amides.
- In the preparation of the Vilsmeier reagent when treated with phosphorus oxychloride or other acid chlorides, which is utilized for formylating, halogenating, and dehydroxylating reactions.
- As a solvent in the synthesis of alkyl halides from alcohols.
- As a co-solvent to examine the relationship between medium polarity and drug solubility.
