骨形态发生蛋白4(BMP4)是属于TGF-β超家族蛋白的多肽。它与其他骨形态发生蛋白一样,参与骨骼和软骨的发育,特别是牙齿和四肢的发育以及骨折的修复。它已证明参与肌肉发育,骨骼矿化和子宫芽发育。BMP4也与表达不足的进行性骨化性纤维结构不良有关。在人类胚胎发育中,BMP4是胚胎早期分化和建立背腹轴所需的关键信号分子。BMP4从脊索的背侧部分分泌,并与音猬因子(从脊索的腹侧部分释放)协同作用,为后期结构的分化建立背腹轴。BMP4刺激上皮外胚层组织的分化。BMP4信号的抑制(通过chordin,noggin或follistatin)导致外胚层分化为神经板。如果这些细胞也接受来自FGF的信号,它们就会分化成脊髓;在缺乏FGF的情况下,细胞会变成脑组织。
