General description
外周蛋白是一种约57 kDa的中间丝亚基,最初发现于外周神经系统的感觉神经元中。随后,在中枢神经系统的一些感觉神经元和其他神经元以及PC12细胞中发现了它。外周蛋白还在某些神经内分泌肿瘤和胰腺的胰岛素分泌细胞中表达。外周蛋白属于III类中间丝亚基家族,包括波形蛋白、神经胶质纤维酸性蛋白(GFAP)和结蛋白。外周蛋白抗体可用于识别、分类和研究整个神经系统的神经元。外周蛋白也是Lou Gehrig′s病(肌萎缩性侧索硬化症)和一些神经元源性肿瘤中出现的气球状轴突的良好诊断标志物。外周蛋白自身抗体常见于糖尿病患者的血清中。外周蛋白与外周蛋白/RDS无关,后者是感光细胞外膜的一种蛋白质,其突变会导致某些形式的慢性视网膜变性。
