General description
Aldehyde dehydrogenase, dimeric NADP-preferring (UniProt: P30838; EC:1.2.1.5; also known as ALDHIII, Aldehyde dehydrogenase 3, Aldehyde dehydrogenase family 3 member A1) is encoded by the ALDH3A1 (also known as ALDH3) gene (Gene ID: 218) in human. ALDH3A1 is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily that catalyzes the NAD(P)+ -dependent oxidation of aromatic and medium chain aldehydes. ALDH3A1 protein forms a homodimer. ALDH3A1 is one of the most abundant proteins expressed in cornea, but it is expressed in other tissues as well, including the stomach, esophagus, skin and lung. ALDH3A1 expression is inversely regulated by PPARg (Peroxisome Proliferators-Activated Receptor g) and is directly correlated with cell proliferation. It plays a role in protection of corneal cells against cellular oxidative stress, including UV radiation and functions as an antioxidant. (Ref.: Pappa, A., et al. (2003).
