General description
OL-protocadherin (OL-pc, protocadherin 10) is a transmembrane protein and a member of the cadherin superfamily, which is characterized by its members’ abilities to undergo interactions that are homophilic in nature via their extracellular domain. Several protocadherins have been observed within the nervous system, and a few have been shown to localize at synapses. With OL-pc, the homophilic binding has been shown to stimulate cell aggregation when the protein is introduced into cadherin-deficient cells. Although the function of OL-protocadherin has yet to be elucidated, studies have shown OL-pc to be necessary to axonal normal projection through the ventral telencephalon, where OL-pc shows highest expression at the striatal region.
