Powassan virus (POWV) is a Flavivirus transmitted by ticks, found in North America and in the Russian Far East. It is named after the town of Powassan, Ontario. It can cause encephalitis, an infection of the brain. There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat Powassan virus disease.
