General description
Novobiocin, also known as albamycin or cathomycin, is an aminocoumarin antibiotic commonly derived from Streptomyces Sp. It exerts its antibacterial activity by inhibiting Topo II α, which corresponds to bacterial DNA gyrase. It is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is significant in research involving highly beta-lactam-resistant pneumococcal infections and anti-orthopoxvirus applications. Functioning as a competitive inhibitor in the ATPase reaction catalyzed by GyrB, Novobiocin is employed in microbiology and cell biology research to effectively prevent the growth of bacterial contaminants.
Application
Novobiocin has been used:
- in cell culture systems to treat mycoplasma contaminations.[3]
- in a research to where it has exhibited anti-cancer effects by inhibition of Hsp90 (heat shock protein)[4],[5]
Biochem/physiol Actions
