General description

Smooth Muscle Actin is a part of the actin family of proteins which are highly conserved andform microfilaments. These filaments are one of the major components of the cytoskeleton.Anti-smooth muscle actin immunohistochemical reactivity is seen in smooth muscle cells, myofibroblasts, and myoepithelial cells.

Other Notes

Actin, Smooth Muscle Positive Control Slides, Product No. 202S, are available for immunohistochemistry (formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections).

There are three classes of myofilaments in vertebrate smooth muscle fibers. The thin filaments correspond to actin and the thick filaments are identified with myosin. The third class of myofilaments (100 A diam) is distinguished from both the actin and

A monoclonal antibody (anti-alpha sm-1) recognizing exclusively alpha-smooth muscle actin was selected and characterized after immunization of BALB/c mice with the NH2-terminal synthetic decapeptide of alpha-smooth muscle actin coupled to keyhole limpet hemocyanin. Anti-alpha sm-1 helped in distinguishing smooth muscle
