Syrian Hamster kidney
The cell line HKT-1097 has been established from a 14 month old male Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) kidney tumour which has been induced by diethylstilbestrol exposure. HKT-1097 cells express epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor, Erb-B2 and Erb-B3 as well as vimentin, desmin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), TGF alpha, PGP 9.5 and S100 protein and neuron-specific enolase. Karyotype analysis revealed a modal number of 44 chromosomes (41% of cells) and polyploidy in approximately 2% of cells. The cells have a doubling time of about 36 hours.
Preparation Note
DMEM + 2 mM Glutamine + 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS).
Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:4, i.e., seeding at 1 x 10,000 cells / cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37 °C. Form a multipolar, loosely packed monolayer.
