与BTC一样，肝素结合表皮生长因子（HB-EGF）是肝素结合EGF家族的成员。天然可溶性HB-EGF是一种19 kDa的糖蛋白，因异质性截短而具有多种形式。可溶性HB-EGF对成纤维细胞、角质形成细胞和平滑肌细胞具有促有丝分裂和趋化作用，但对毛细血管内皮细胞则没有。在单核细胞、巨噬细胞以及血管和主动脉平滑肌细胞（SMC）中可检测到HB-EGF的产生。HB-EGF在动脉粥样硬化的发病机理中可能会起作用。它也可能是Jun诱导的致癌转化的效应因子。HB-EGF可以高亲和力与EGFR结合，并以中等亲和力与ErbB结合。
