General description
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) protein is composed of two subunits- α and β, where α subunit has resemblance to LH (luteinizing hormone), hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and TSH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), which are glycoprotein hormones. α subunit has one glycosylation site and β subunit has two.
Application
Follicle stimulating hormone from sheep pituitary has been used for-
- the in vitro maturation of bovine ovaries
- the hormonal treatment of Sertoli cells
- the intraperitoneal hormone treatment of male lizards
- the intramuscular hormone treatment of American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
- use in medium used for the maturation of bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs)
Biochem/physiol Actions
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) in involved in the growth of ovarian follicles and steroidogenesis of ovaries. FSHR (follicle stimulating hormone receptor) interacts with FSH in the ovaries, and determines the responsiveness to this hormone. Depressed levels of FSHR result in poor responsiveness and influence folliculogenesis. In Caucasian population, certain polymorphisms in FSHR gene are more commonly found in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
The α-chain is not active; biological specificity is attributed to the β-chain. Induces maturation of Graafian follicles of the ovary; promotes development of germinal cells in males; activates cytosolic tyrosine kinase.
Analysis Note

Sexual selection predicts that trade-offs maintain trait variation in alternative reproductive strategies. Experiments often focus on testosterone (T), but the gonadotropins follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone may provide a clearer understanding of the pleiotropic relationships among traits. We assess the
