Gene Information
human ... G6PD(2539)
General description
G6PD is a cytosolic oxidoreductase that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step of the pentose phosphate pathway. The enzyme utilizes NADP⁺ as a cofactor to oxidize glucose-6-phosphate, generating NADPH and 6-phosphogluconolactone. G6PD is widely expressed in mammalian tissues and plays a critical role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. Structurally, it functions as a dimer or tetramer, and its activity is essential for protecting cells from oxidative damage.
Application
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase has been used in:
- Enzyme activity and NADPH generation assays
- Oxidative stress and redox biology studies
- Metabolic pathway analysis
- Studies of G6PD deficiency
Biochem/physiol Actions
G6PD catalyzes the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate, generating NADPH and ribose-5-phosphate. NADPH is critical for maintaining cellular antioxidant systems and biosynthetic reactions. Dysfunction of G6PD affects redox homeostasis and is associated with hemolytic disorders.
