Biochem/physiol Actions

Integrin α-3 is a protein encoded by the ITGA3 gene in humans and is a member of the integrin family of cell adhesion receptors. It is a transmembrane integrin receptor subunit for various laminin isoforms that mediates signals between the cells and their microenvironment. ITGA3 plays an important role in the maintenance of tissue integrity. It may function as a receptor for fibronectin, laminin, and collagen. ITGA3 plays a central role in the interplay of cells, morphogens and ECM and is required for proper nephrogenesis. It acts as a potential marker protein for cells undergoing enhanced Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and for cancer cells with aggressive phenotypes.
