General description
CNDP1 (carnosine dipeptidase 1) is a secreted protein, which is found in human blood and central nervous system (CNS). It has a molecular weight of 57kDa and functions as a homodimer. It is an N-glycosylated glycoprotein. It is also found in liver and belongs to the M20 metallopeptidase family.

Biochem/physiol Actions
CNDP1 (carnosine dipeptidase 1) functions as a carboxypeptidase and dipeptidase and is responsible for the degradation of carnosine and homocarnosine. It forms a complex with α-2 macroglobulin, which is a protease inhibitor. In type 2 diabetes, this gene is linked with susceptibility to nephropathy. Its reduced serum levels are linked with aggressiveness of prostate cancer. Reduced levels are also associated with lymph node metastasis. Its circulating levels are also decreased in glioblastoma, and in gastrointestinal cancer this is linked with poor outcome. Thus, it might be a putative maker for aggressive cancer and colorectal cancer.
