Bone morphogenic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI) acts as an inhibitor of TGF-β (transforming growth factor beta receptor) signaling which causes epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Upregulation of BAMBI gene is observed in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a number of cancers including thyroid, liver, colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer. BAMBI might regulate the events of inflammation and remodeling processes.

BAMBI is predominantly expressed in placenta, spleen and kidney medulla and also found liver, prostate, gut and kidney cortex.
