Biochem/physiol Actions
Methionine aminopeptidases (METAPs) are responsible for removal of methionine from newly generated polypeptides. Glycosylated METAP2 protects eIF2α (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit α) from EIF2AK (eIF2 kinase)-mediated phosphorylation, thereby promoting protein synthesis. It has been shown to play crucial role in tumorigenesis. METAP2 is a target of the fungal metabolite fumagillin.
