The gene COL22A1 (collagen type XXII α 1 chain) is mapped to human chromosome 8q24.2. Structurally, the encoded protein belongs to the fibril-associated collagen with interrupted triple helix (FACIT) protein family.

Collagen-22 is an extracellular matrix protein which is present at the tissue junctions of various tissues, including muscles, tendons, the heart, articular cartilage and skin. The COL22A1 (collagen type XXII α 1 chain) gene is upregulated in HNSCC (squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck) and is associated with lymph node metastasis. Mutation in COL22A1 gene is also linked with serum creatinine levels.
