白细胞介素-13是由小鼠和人类中活化的Th2细胞产生的多效性细胞因子。IL-13主要分泌为132个氨基酸的未糖基化蛋白，分子量为10,000道尔顿。对小鼠IL-13基因的4.3 kb DNA片段进行测序，并以映射11号染色体的单拷贝形式出现。在人类中，IL-13基因的4.6 kb DNA片段以单拷贝形式出现，并映射到5号染色体。IL-13诱导B细胞增殖，还诱导IgE转换。使用人红白血病细胞系TF-1在培养物中检测人和小鼠IL-13产品的增殖活性。
