MBP function as an antigenic target in autoimmune disease experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). It also has a crucial role to play in human demyelinating diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS). MBP plays an essential role in cytoskeletal turnover and membrane extension. Additionally, it is also involved in Fyn-mediated signaling pathways, sequestration of phosphoinositides and regulation of calcium homoeostasis.
