MCDB培养基专门用于特定细胞的低蛋白或无血清培养，需补充激素、生长因子、微量元素或低浓度的透析胎牛血清蛋白(FBSP)。每种MCDB培养基都经过特别的配方设计（定性和定量），提供成分确定和恰当平衡的营养环境，选择性促进特定细胞的生长。MCDB 105培养基是MCDB 104培养基的改良版。适合用于WI-38、MRC-5等人二倍体成纤维样细胞的长期培养。
