Biochem/physiol Actions

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) plays a vital role in the regulation of glucose uptake in mouse 3T3-L1 and primary human adipocytes. In addition, it is also implicated in lipid metabolism and in energy balance. FGF-21 plays a key role in controlling oxidative stress cell response. Overexpression of the gene has been associated with the development of acute pancreatitis, obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Additionally, elevated expression of FGF-21 has been observed in patients with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thus, it can be considered as a potent target for an effective treatment of diabetes.
