一般描述
Streptozocin (STZ) found to have two anomers, α and β. STZ is a methylnitrosourea that attached to a glucosamine molecule. As nitrosourea class alkylating agent it results with toxic effect to the cells and cause damage to the DNA.
应用
STZ uses and applications:
- STZ is an antibiotic4 and antineoplastic agent.
- STZ is used in the clinic to treat pancreatic cancer.
- STZ is toxic to insulin producing β-cells of pancreas in mammals The relative toxicity to β-cells is occurring because of the similarity of STZ to glucose, as it transported into the cells by glucose transport protein, GLUT2, which is highly expressed on β-cells.
- STZ is used for treating cancer of Islets of Langerhans and to produce animal models of type 1, diabetes.
- STZ is commonly used to induce diabetes in rats. STZ is injected at 60-100mg/Kg to induce diabetes in rats model. -
- STZ cytotoxicity mechanism study was performed in insulin secreting pancreatic cancer cells (RIN-5F). This study showed maximum inhibition of cell viability (~60-70%) of RIN-5F cells with treatment of STZ at 10mM (~2.67 mg/ml) after 24-48h.

Mode of Action: Streptozocin is an N-nitroso-containing compound which acts as a nitric oxide donor in pancreatic islets; induces death of insulin-secreting cells, producing an animal model of diabetes.
