Cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Pexiganan (MSI-78) is a 22-aa synthetic cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP), an analog of magainin found in the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). Pexiganan is effective against both Gram-positive (staphylococci MIC ≤16 µg/mL, streptococci & methicillin-resistant S. aureus MIC 8-64 µg/mL, S. pyrogenes MIC 16-256 µg/mL) and Gram-negative aerobes (MIC 4-32 µg/mL, E. cloacae MCI 1-128 µg/mL, A. faecalis 4-64 µg/mL) by disrupting bacteria cell wall or membrane.

Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are active immune effectors of multicellular organisms and are also considered as new antimicrobial drug candidates. One of the problems encountered when developing AMPs as drugs is the difficulty of reaching sufficient killing concentrations under physiological
