MitoTEMPOL is a mitochondria-targeting antioxidant composed of the piperidine nitroxide TEMPOL and the lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation. MitoTEMPOL is more active toward ubiquinol in mitochondrial membranes than butylTEMPOL, TEMPO and TEMPOL. Systemic administration of mitotempol prevents the sustained elevations of blood pressure in rats exposed to intermittent hypoxia (IH) for 10 days (10 mg/kg, i.p.).
