FINO2 is used as aresearch tool to study pathways of ferroptosis and to probe explore how thesepathways relate to diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s andcardiovascular diseases.

FINO2 is a novel inducer of ferroptosis. It acts in a different manner than class 1 inducers, which deplete glutathione by inhibiting cystine import via system xc−, or class 2 inihbitors, which covalently inhibit glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4). FINO2 has a two-fold mechanism of action. It indirectly inhibits the enzymatic of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and directly oxidizes iron, leading to widespread lipid peroxidation and eventual cell death. FINO2 was found to be more potent in cancer cells than in nonmalignant cells of the same type.
