General description
Ofloxacinhydrochloride is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that exhibitswater solubility, whereas ofloxacin itself is only sparingly soluble in aqueoussolutions.
Application
Ofloxacin hydrochloride may be used as a standard to study theadsorption behaviour of antibiotics.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ofloxacin kills bacteria by blocking DNA gyrase and type IV topoisomerase—critical enzymes for DNA replication and transcription—leading to cell death. Ofloxacin has 100 times higher affinity for bacterial DNA gyrase than for mammalian. It is effective against a broad array of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, in addition to Mycoplasmas.
