Gene Information
mouse ... Fgf2(14173)
General description
FGF-2 (fibroblast growth factor 2) is a basic heparin binding growth factor. It is ubiquitously expressed and belongs to the FGF family. It is also referred to as BFGF (basic fibroblast growth factor). The recombinant mouse FGF-2 is a single, non-glycosylated chain containing 145 amino acids and having a molecular weight of 16.3kDa.
Biochem/physiol Actions
FGF-2 (fibroblast growth factor 2, also referred to as BFGF (basic fibroblast growth factor)) stimulates the proliferation of a wide variety of cells including mesenchymal, neuroectodermal and endothelial cells. It is present in the preimplantation embryos and is important for proper development. It is also responsible for angiogenesis. FGF-2 plays a crucial role in adipogenesis and development of adipose tissues. It is associated with tumor growth and metastasis.
