Gene Information
human ... FGF8(2253)
General description
FGF8 (fibroblast growth factor 8) is mapped to human chromosome 10q24.32. It is a part of the fibroblast growth factor family. In adults, the FGF8 gene is expressed only in testis. During development, FGF8a and FGF8b isoforms are expressed in midbrain and hindbrain.
Biochem/physiol Actions
FGF8 (fibroblast growth factor 8) gene encodes secreted signaling molecules, which is essential for the formation of face, brain and limbs, during development. Overexpression of FGF8 is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma and also offers resistance to chemotherapy. FGF family members have wide mitogenic and cell survival activities and participate in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. FGF8 supports androgen and anchorage independent growth of mammary tumor cells. FGF8 over expression increases tumor growth and angiogensis. The adult expression of FGF-8 gene is restricted to testes and ovaries. FGF8 functions as an embryonic epithelial factor. FGF8 takes part in midbrain and limb development, organogenesis, embryo gastrulation and left-right axis determination.
