生化/生理作用
巯基乙酸钠是细菌学研究中用来保持培养基还原条件的常用试剂。巯基乙酸还能够通过将蛋白质硫醇基维持在还原状态,保护酶,防止酶失活。巯基乙酸培养基经常用于炎症研究,在体内诱导中性粒细胞和巨噬细胞响应。
巯基乙酸钠用作还原剂,适用厌氧菌和微需氧菌生长。

在室温下,在水中浓度超过70%情况下,每月会形成1-2%的硫代乙丙交酯,在酸性或碱性条件下,会水解成原来的自由化合物。70%溶液在空气中氧化,但当密封后在室温下稳定。巯基乙酸盐在储存过程中可能会丧失纯度。去除空气并不会改善稳定度。
