General description

Method: colorimetric, acc. to Neßler, with color card and sliding comparator 0.5 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 10 mg/l NH₄⁺ MQuant®
This MQuant® Ammonium test (formally MColortest®) is suitable for the colorimetric determination using the easy to use color card. The evaluation considers the untreated sample so even turbid and colored water samples can be analyzed. The test measures both ammonium ions and dissolved ammonia in e.g. groundwater and surface water, seawater, drinking water and aquarium water. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) occurs partly in the form of ammonium ions and partly as ammonia. A pH-dependent equilibrium exists between the two forms.

Method
Ammonium ions react with Neßler′s reagent to form a yellow-brown compound. The ammonium concentration is measured semiquantitatively by allocating the color to a value on a reference scale.

The test can be used in:
  • Groundwater and surface water
  • Drinking water
  • Wastewater
  • Aquarium water, waters from aquaculture
  • Boiler and boiler feed water, cooling water
  • Swimming-pool water
  • Soils and fertilizers after appropriate sample pretreatment

This test is not suited for seawater.
