Target description
Adiponectin (UniProt: Q15848; also known as 30 kDa adipocyte complement-related protein, Adipocyte complement-related 30 kDa protein (ACRP30), Adipocyte, C1q and collagen domain-containing protein, Adipose most abundant gene transcript 1 protein, apM-1, Gelatin-binding protein) is encoded by the ADIPOQ (also known as ACDC, ACRP30, APM1, GBP28) gene (Gene ID: 9370) in human. Adiponectin is a homomultimeric secreted glycoprotein, characterized by a collagen-like domain (aa 42-107) and a globular, C1q domain (aa 108-244). It exists in several oligomeric forms, including trimers (low-molecular-weight (LMW)), hexamers, and 12 to 18-mers (high-molecular-weight (HMW)) complexes, with the HMW form being the most biologically active. Adiponectin enhances insulin sensitivity, regulate glucose metabolism, and promote fatty acid oxidation. It activates various signaling pathways, notably the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, leading to improved metabolic health. Additionally, adiponectin has anti-inflammatory effects and plays a role in cardiovascular health. Adiponectin is expressed in adipose tissue and secreted into the bloodstream. Low levels of adiponectin are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Its anti-inflammatory properties suggest a protective role against atherosclerosis and other inflammatory conditions.
