General description

Ethanol is a highly combustible colorless liquid. It is highly reactive in nature. It oxidizes to afford acetaldehyde or acetic acid. It undergoes reaction with carboxylic acid and derivatives to form esters, with aldehydes and ketones to afford acetals and ketals, respectively. The monitoring of ethanol levels is very important in control of fermentation processes and in certification of alcoholic beverages.

Application

Ethanol has been used in the mobile phase for the quantification of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) by HPLC. It has been used to compose the receptor medium to investigate the release profiles of the various pharmaceutical formulations of ketoconazole drug and their in vitro diffusion studies.
