General description

WAS protein family member 1 (WAVE-1) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 6q21. The encoded protein contains small WH2 acidic domain, a cofilin-like domain, proline-rich domain at C-terminal end and EVH1 domain at N-terminal end. WAVE-1 is active mainly in the brain and lungs, but its mRNA is also found in the placenta, liver and pancreas.

Biochem/physiol Actions

WAS protein family member 1 (WAVE-1) functions as a key pro-autophagic protein. The protein has an ability to increase cell survival rate. In addition, it also controls chemoresistance in leukemia cells via Beclin1/ B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl)-2 and Beclin1/ phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3K)-III complex-dependent pathways. The encoded protein enhances ovarian cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion via activating PI3K/AKT (protein kinase B) and mitogen activated protein kinase p38 (p38MAPK) signaling pathways.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.
