SCGN (Secretagogin) is a novel EF-hand, cell type specific, Ca-binding protein (CBP). It is expressed in the neuroendocrine cells. Specifically, its expression has been reported in the (entero)-endocrine cells and in neuroendocrine cells in the periphery and in the mammalian brain. It is involved in the regulation of intracellular Ca²⁺ dynamics. It contains a Ca²⁺ binding domain and six putative EF hand motifs.

Western Blotting (1 paper)

SCGN (Secretagogin) is mainly acting as a calcium ion sensor in the Ca²⁺-induced exocytosis and membrane fusion in neurons and in neuroendocrine cells. It can bind four Ca²⁺ ions, but interacts with only one SCGN interacting protein. It acts as a serum marker for identifying neuronal damage. It has been reported that SCGN may control the intracellular Ca²⁺ signaling pathway by reflecting cellular responses to the micro-environmental stimuli. Furthermore, neuroprotective effects of SCGN also have been documented in the Alzheimer′s disease.
