Application

Tetrodotoxin has been used to study its effects on microglial functions in rats2. This toxin has also been used to inactivate lateral magnocellular nucleus of the nidopallium (LMAN) in juvenile zebra finch. This study reported that the toxin causes a decrease in sequence and acoustic variability which result in the production of a stereotyped song by the motor pathway3.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Reversible, selective blocker of Na+ channels.
Reversible, selective blocker of Na+ channels; blocks propagation of impulses in excitable membranes. Used to characterize sodium channels in excitable membranes and to study the role of sodium channels in normal physiology and disease.

Packaging

Vial contains 1 mg of tetrodotoxin and approx. 5 mg citrate buffer, pH 4.8.

Preparation Note

The product is water soluble and stable at pH 4-5 if it is stored frozen. It is unstable in strong acid and alkaline solutions and is rapidly destroyed by boiling at pH 2 and below.

Pulsed focused ultrasound (pFUS) technology is being developed for clinical neuro/immune modulation and regenerative medicine. Biological signal transduction of pFUS forces can require mechanosensitive or voltage-gated plasma membrane ion channels. Previous studies suggested pFUS is capable of activating either channel
