精氨酸的甲基化是由精氨酸甲基转移酶(PRMT)家族的酶介导。这些酶将甲基从S-腺苷-L-甲硫氨酸转移到精氨酸残基的胍基氮。研究发现精氨酸甲基化是信号转导、转录、RNA转运和剪接的重要修饰手段。PRMT1(也称HRMT1L2 和 IR1B4)是通过其与细胞静止(cell quiescence)中的重要蛋白BTG1 和TIS21的相互作用而分离。PRMT1 是一种361个氨基酸的蛋白;其剪接变体的N末端不同,从而产生了343、361和347个氨基酸的三种亚型(分别为变体1、2、3)。涉及RNA 代谢的蛋白是PRMT1的底物,其中包括Sam68。
