General description
甘露醇盐酚红琼脂是选择性琼脂的改良版，用于金黄色葡萄球菌的分离和推定鉴定。甘露醇盐琼脂的组成支持金黄色葡萄球菌的生长，而7.5%的高度盐含量抑制许多其他微生物。甘露醇降解为酸，与金黄色葡萄球菌的致病性相关，因此可作为该物种的指示剂。一些嗜盐肠球菌和弧菌也在甘露醇盐琼脂上生长。与大多数其他葡萄球菌相反，金黄色葡萄球菌可以从甘露醇中形成酸。因此，它们建立了带有黄色区域的黄色菌落。头状葡萄球菌、模仿葡萄球菌、肉糖葡萄球菌、S. scuri、缓慢葡萄球菌和鸡葡萄球菌也是甘露醇阳性的。
