General description
PER2是昼夜节律机制的组成部分,对于产生昼夜节律至关重要。它通过与其他昼夜节律调节蛋白相互作用并将其转运到细胞核来影响时钟功能,是昼夜节律转录环中的负调控元件。 PER2负调节时钟NPAS2-BMAL1 BMAL2诱导的反式激活。该基因是Period基因家族的成员,并在视交叉上核(哺乳动物脑中的主要昼夜节律起搏器)中以昼夜节律模式表达。该家族中的基因编码运动活动,代谢和行为的昼夜节律的组成部分。视交叉上核中的昼夜节律表达在恒定的黑暗中继续进行,并且明/暗周期的变化引起视交叉上核中基因表达的比例变化。该基因的特定功能尚不清楚。
