Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), also known as serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), is a pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent enzyme that facilitates the reversible transfer of an amino group from alanine to α-ketoglutarate, producing pyruvate and glutamate. Predominantly located in the liver and serum, ALT is also present in other tissues such as the heart and muscles. Its primary role in metabolism involves the gluconeogenesis pathway, where it helps convert amino acids into glucose precursors, thus playing a crucial part in energy production during fasting or intense exercise. Elevated serum ALT levels are indicative of hepatocellular injury and are commonly used as a biomarker for liver damage.
