General description

Zinc is a metallic element that is found in natural minerals or ores as well as in living organisms as a trace element. Zinc is commonly used as a reducing agent in analytical assays and chemical reactions; it also has an essential role in biological systems such as enzyme function, protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and normal development and growth of mammals.

Application

Zinc can be used for preparation of organozinc reagents, Reformatsky reagents, and the Simmons Smith reagent. It is also used in zinc-mediated cross-coupling reactions, e.g. the acylation of alcohols, amines, thiols, ylides, the synthesis of carbamates, and Friedel-Crafts acylation of electron rich arenes.
