General description
4,4′-Dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide reacts with various transition-metal salts in MeOH to afford a range of coordination polymers with 1-D chain and 2-D sheet architectures incorporating 36-hxl and 44-sql topologies. 4,4′-Dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide is reported to undergo hydrothermal reaction with d(10) metal ions (Cd2+ and Zn2+) to form three-dimensional grid-like coordination polymers. The electron density of the halogen-bonded complex of 4,4′-dipyridyl-N,N′-dioxide with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene at 90K has been studied by X-ray diffraction.
Application
4,4′-Dipyridyl N,N′-dioxide may be used:
- as bidentate ligand in the preparation of co-ordination polymers of terbium(III)
- as ligand in the preparation of 2D CuII complex, with a stacked wavelike structure, and 3D materials, with CoII and NiII
- in the preparation of a Mg-based luminescent MIL-53 metal-organic framework (MOF)

In this article, we report the successful preparation of a Mg-based luminescent MIL-53 metal-organic framework (MOF), namely [Mg2(BDC)2(BPNO)]·2DMF (1) (BDC = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate, BPNO = 4,4'-dipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) in a mixed solvent containing a 2 : 3 volume ratio of DMF

Hydrothermal reactions of d(10) metal ions (Cd(2+) and Zn(2+)) with 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate acid (1,4-H2NDC) and 4,4'-dipyridyl N,N'-dioxide (4,4'-dpdo) form two three-dimensional grid-like coordination polymers [Cd2(1,4-NDC)2(4,4'-dpdo)]·H2O 1 and [Zn4(μ3-OH)2(1,4-NDC)3(H2O)2](4,4'-dpdo)·2H2O 2. Both coordination polymers were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy

The reaction of M(S2O6) (M = Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II)) with 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (bpdo) results in the formation of novel 3D, 2D, and mononuclear complexes. Complex 1, {[Cu(H2O)(bpdo)2](S2O6)(H2O)}n, is a 2-D wavelike polymer with the Cu(II) ion located on a 2-fold
