General description
Chitin, a linear amino polysaccharide composed of β1,4-linked N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc), is the second most abundant natural biopolymer. It forms the carbohydrate backbone of the exoskeletons of crustacians and insects and is also found in the cell wall of yeast and fungi.
Application
The chemical properties, biocompatibility, and low toxicity of native or chemically-modified chitin makes it a suitable vehicle for drug delivery development. It′s ability to adsorb both metal ions and hydrophobic organic compounds has also made it useful in waste water processing and other industrial applications.
