Application

N-Ethylaniline (NEA) was used in the preparation of n-ethylanilinium trifluoroacetate by reacting with trifluoroacetic acid. It may be used as an internal standard in the GC analysis of nicotine extraction from nicotine gum.
It may be used in the synthesis of the following:
  • 2-(N-ethylphenylamino)-1,4-benzoquinone
  • 2-(arylaminomethyl)phenylboronic acid
  • poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films containing NEA
  • poly(N-ethylaniline) (PNEA)
  • N-ethyl-N-phenylpicolinamide
  • 4-chloro-N-ethyl-N-phenylpicolinamide
  • N2,N6-diethyl-N2,N6-diphenylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide

General description

N-Ethylaniline (NEA) is a secondary aromatic amine. One of the methods reported for its synthesis is platinum-catalyzed hydroamination of ethylene with aniline. The ionic properties of NEA has been studied using two-color resonant two-photon mass analyzed threshold ionization spectroscopy. Its oxidation by periodate in water-acetone medium has been investigated. The charge-transfer complex formed by the interaction of NEA with iodine has been studied spectrophotometrically in different solvents. It undergoes “ABBCC”-type five component reaction with formaldehyde and acetylacetone to form tricyclic derivatives. Copolymers of aniline and N-ethylaniline has been synthesized and analyzed.
